Sanna Nuutinen made Finnish golf history

By finishing fourth in the final event of the Ladies European Tour (LET) in Malaga, SGA’s Sanna Nuutinen secured herself the 5th spot in the LET order of merit 2020. It is the best LET ranking any Finnish player has reached so far. The previous record was Minea Blomqvist-Kakko’s 7th place in 2004.

Sanna’s career has been in a steady upward curve for the past couple of years, and the 2020 season further raised the slope. In the 12 main tour events she played, she finished in the top ten four times. She also played two Let Access Series competitions winning one of them and finishing 6th in the other.

“I am extremely happy about the top 5 ranking. The improvement from last season’s 21st spot is pretty dramatic. This tells me that we are doing a lot of things right with my coaches. This year we have been particularly focusing on shaping the ball different ways. I have made definite progress but there is still a lot of work to do on that front. My main goals for the season were the top 5 ranking and winning one LET competition. The top 5 is great, winning was still postponed to next season”, Sanna describes her feelings after the season final.

Due to the corona pandemic, significantly fewer tournaments were played and a lot of special arrangements were required from the players and organizers in 2020. Sanna adapted to the exceptional conditions without major problems. ”I got used to the bubble life and in a way almost enjoyed being able to fully focus on golf, training and rest.”

In a normal season, Sanna would have reached the LPGA Tour qualifier final with her ranking. This year, there are no qualifiers so this opportunity will not be available. Sanna is, however, determined to play on the main tour in the years to come.

A shorter-term goal for her are the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Qualifying between players continues until the end of June. Sanna’s position is very strong at the moment, but not completely secured yet. “Playing in Tokyo would certainly be one of the greatest experiences of my life. Hopefully, the Games can be held and I will be boarding the Tokyo plane”, she notes.

With her historical LET ranking, Sanna has definitely established herself as one of the best female golfers in Europe. The whole SGA squad congratulates her, is extremely proud of her and wishes her continued success in reaching her further goals.
