SGA’s Rasmus Karlsson took home the victory in the Finnish stroke play championships played in Ruuhikoski on July 15-18. The final stages of the competition were exciting as Rasmus first levelled the competition with Kullo Golf Club’s Alex Hietala by a magnificent birdie on the last hole. He then continued brilliantly to sink the winning 1.5-meter birdie putt in the play off. Both Rasmus and Alex shot 278 (-10) in the four round regular competition.
“Wow what a day! My first men’s championship medal and immediately a golden one. I stayed patient all week and it paid off. In last year’s championships in Vaasa I was in contention until the final day but then froze in the end. That experience helped me to stay calm and concentrated this time”, Rasmus comments his great performance.
The championship week was successful for the SGA also as a team. In addition to Rasmus’ win, Lauri Ruuska and AJ Lintunen tied for the bronze at -5 and the 17-year-old Veikka Viskari tied the 14th spot with the defending champion Ilari Saulo at +1. In the past 4 years, the SGA has won the men’s stroke play title three times, and this year is a double jackpot with both match and stroke play titles!
