The 55th Finnish Amateur Championship, Erkko Trophy, took place in Tali golf in Helsinki. The tournament ended after exiting stages with the victory of SGA’s Ilari Saulo. He defeated his team mate Carl Hellat in the first play-off hole (18/par 5) by chipping in a handsome eagle. Both Ilari and Carl completed the tournament rounds with -9.
This was the second major championship for Ilari this summer as he also won the Finnish Match Play Championships in July. For Carl, the silver medal was another excellent performance after previous week’s 3rd place on the Finnish PGA tour.
“Winning sometimes takes a bit of luck, and today it was on my side. The key to my solid game this year has been to stay patient through the competitions. Now the patience paid off in the last chip”, Ilari analyses his performance.
Erkko Trophy was the last amateur competition in Finland for the 23-year-old Ilari who will turn professional in the autumn. Before that he will participate in the British Amateur Championships in August and the European Amateur Championships in September.
