Casper Simberg excelled in Copa de Andalucia 2020

Seven SGA players participated in Copa de Andalucia elite amateur tournament played in Real Club de Golf Guadalmina on Jan. 9-12. Among a high class field including the 8th and 13th best ranked WAGR players and all of Spain’s top players, SGA’s Casper Simberg excelled for the T5th place. At -10 he achieved the lowest score ever recorded by a Finnish amateur at this event.

Naturally very pleased with his performance, Casper comments:I played well particularly considering that this was my first tournament since the Finnish Tour final in September. We’ve clearly been working on the right things with my coaches David da Silva and Niklas Dahlgren.”

Copa de Andalucia has over the years grown into a category B WAGR ranked event. For comparison, Finland’s top ranked amateur event, The Erkko Trophy, is a category D tournament. This year the WAGR ranking cut off point was 2380, and close to half of the field were USA based college players and elite amateur Spanish and international players.

In addition to Casper’s brilliant performance, Ilari Saulo and his Estonian team-mate Mattias Varjun placed T22nd with the score of -4. Mattias’ amazing third round score of 64 was the lowest round of the week. Rasmus Karlsson was T29th at -1, and Kevin Jegers T39th at +3.

“As a part of their winter training, several of our players have participated in Copa de Andalucía in the past four years. This year we had a high of seven players in the field. With five of them making the lowest cut in the tournament history of +4, our results were the best we have reached so far. This indicates the dramatic improvement in our competitiveness and quality of performance.

We enjoy competing and testing ourselves against high quality fields and for this reason strongly promote our elite amateurs’ participation in this tournament. Under the new WAGR ranking system coming into effect, our policy of regularly competing in the highest level tournaments will benefit our young players, tells SGA’s Head Coach David da Silva.
